  • 10 fold increase in the number of 'Life members'.

  • Members attending the yearly annual scientific meeting have increased from 22 delegates(families not included) in 2nd year 2000, in Cumbria; 36 delegates(excluding family) in Manchester in 3rd year- 2001, to 82 (approx) in Birmingham in the 4th year-2002, 104(approx) in Middlesbrough in the 5th year-2003 and presently has been 80(approx) in the 6th year in Eastbourne.

  • The quality and number of scientific papers have improved. The chief guest speakers who have been called to adjudge the free papers over the past two years( Mr.J. Stothard, Prof. R. Madhok, Mr.David Dandy and Mr.Kenneth Tuson) have certainly appreciated the scientific sessions as one of the liveliest in the country.

  • The previous winner of the best paper presentation award in 2003 has now published her travelling fellowship tour to Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. The pictures and the excerpt is published in the web for you all to have a look.

British Orthopaedic Association: Annual Congress 2004

Manchester International Convention Centre and G-Mex 15 - 17th September 2004

  • We request all members of the IOS(UK) to support this occasion.

The Treasurer' report:

  • Mr.Vinod Shah reported a very healthy IOS(UK) over the past three years and for the present. The expenses and income have matched and presently we are in a very satisfactory position. The expenses from our fantastic meeting at the Wynyard Samsung meeting in 2003 was well matched from satisfactory sponsorship and hard work from Mr.Amar Rangan and his colleagues.

  • Presently the guest lecturers from India for the Instructional course lecture have been funded by sponsorship monies raised by Mr.Muddu, Mr.Deshmukh and Mr.M.S.Srinivasan.

  • The invites will be accommodated by the liaison committee members in and around Manchester.

The President's address:

  • Mr.M.S.Srinivasan thanked his team and the executive committee for their support and unflinching great efforts to make the IOS(UK) a grand success story.

  •  The IOS(UK) has now grown from stumbling 'innocent infancy' to early interesting, 'adventurous childhood'. It is sure to progress to greater heights and future 'confident adolescence and 'mature adulthood'. During these early formative years it has shown resilience and character. It has been watched carefully by our colleagues, members and non-members alike, and the BOA and many others(eg. Indian Anaesthetic society etc.).

  • It is left to us in the IOS(UK) to shape it to what it wants to be and what we want it to be.

  • One of it's major strengths has been the lively scientific sessions and like mindedness of it's members. The sense of fun and mutual respect has been exemplary.

  • From a small innocent beginning in 1997 sought by simple but majestic men Mr.B. Muddu and Mr.B.Peeravalli it has  now grown rapidly to be a force to reckon with and surely lead to future heights under the new stewardship and president.

Mr.Srinivasan then opened the floor and started the forum for the formal election of the new President, Secretary, Treasurer and Executive committee. the following were elected unanimously for 2004 to 2007(3year term):

  • Mr.Venkat spoke about the Indian Orthopaedic Journal(Update). He requested the IOS(UK) to either take over the function and editing of the journal or increase it's support to the journal. The IOS(UK) members were already co-editors and were on the editorial board. The elected President Mr.Suresh Rao would give it a priority consideration and come back to Mr.Venkat. It was requested that those interested in being on the editorial board should write to Mr.S.Venkat.

TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP

  1. It was proposed that we should pursue the 'SpR travelling fellowship' as a part of the 'World Orthopaedic Concern' and this was accepted by the committee. Mr.Suresh Rao will chair the sub-committee to select the 'SpR' to take up this fellowship.

  2. ABC type of exchange fellowship with Indian Orthopaedic Association:

      • The Executive committee agreed that it was a great idea to pursue, accomplish it's inception and execute it.

      • It was thought best to set aside sponsorship money for this venture.

      • Probably start with only 2 exchange fellows and in a smaller scale.

      • It was noted that there were many IOS(UK) members involved in various ways in setting up exchanges such as - Mr.Muddu, Mr.Rangan, Mr.Shanker, Mr.Roysam, Mr. Nanu etc.

      • The committee thought it best to set up a sub-committee to look into this very carefully and set up as priority.

      • The executive committee decided that it was best to elect this core team to pursue this matter further.

      • The sub-committee elected was-

            • Mr.Amar Rangan(Chair)

            • Mr.Rakesh Dallal(Sec)

            • Mr.Ravi Kumar

            • Mr.S. Roysam

            • Mr.Venkat

Education

    • The executive committee on the suggestion of Mr.Ravi Kumar and Mr. Nalla decided that the members can give clinical attachments to SHOs and this could benefit both parties. Clinical research and writing papers could be made easier for the consultants with this extra doctor, and the SHO would gain experience and depending on his commitment further his career depending on his input into the post.

    • The GMC was now accepting a post called 'Hon. SHO'. Mr.Ravi Kumar from Stanmore to be contacted.

WEB Site

    • The web site was well maintained by Mr. & Mrs Srinivasan so far and with the help of Medical Internet Associates. Mr.Srinivasan felt it best to move forward and be handed over to Mr.Gollapudi and his team. Mr.Gollapudi kindly obliged.

Mr.Suresh Rao and Mrs.Veena Rao were congratulated on being elected the new President and First lady of the IOS(UK).

Mr.Suresh Rao the current President of the IOS(UK) - Incoming presidential address:-

    •  The detailed excerpts will be pasted shortly on the web.

Mr.Kenneth Tuson, Consultant orthopaedic surgeon and President of the World Orthopaedic Concern, Kent and Sussex hospital, Turnbridge Wells, Kent; gave the after dinner speech and adjudged the scientific free papers kindly.

Mrs. Tuson very kindly presented the mementos to the previous chairmen and secretaries.

Vote of thanks given to Mr. Ravi Koka and his gallant team for this fantastic afternoon and excellent dinner, cooked by Mrs. Hima Koka herself who came to our rescue( cooked 101 dinners!), as the caterer's left the organising team in the lurch.

No words can convey the deepest gratitude we have to Mrs.Hima Koka for this great commitment and magnanimous gesture to the IOS(UK).

Thank you all
Makaram Srinivasan
