The BOA announces a one day course for those considering an application for Specialist Registration with the GMC through the CESR (Article 14) route.

The course is to be convened by Mr David Limb, who is Chairman of the BOA Education Committee.

Expert faculty from the following committees will contribute.

• The FRCS(Tr&Orth) Examination Board

• The SAC

• The CESR applications panel of the SAC

• The GMC

Mr Vikas Khanduja, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge is  organising a Basic Science Revision Course for the FRCS (Orth) with Prof. Neil Rushton and the Furlong Research Foundation in Cambridge on the 13th and 14th of March 2008. The third Bangalore Shoulder Course will take place on 27th and 28th October 2007, at the Taj Westend Hotel, Bangalore, India. Its distinguished International Faculty includes Mr Len Funk, Mr Leo Jacobs, Mr Andrew Wallace, Mr Ian Trail and Mr Muddu among others. Mr Suhaib Sait has been appointed by the London Deanery as the Training Programme Director for the Southeast Thames (Guy's, St Thomas' and Kings') Orthopaedic Rotation.

Mr Rakesh Dalal was a guest lecturer at the Indian Foot Society Meeting held in Agra in October 2006, an honour he shared with Mr Don McBride, Predsident of BOFAS and Prof Tanaka from Japan.  A  joint meeting between IFAS and BOFAS is on the anvil for 2008. The first joint fellowship holder (a collaborative venture between IFAS and BOFAS) Mr Ravi Mahajan is currently setting high standards at Stepping Hill Hospital, Manchester.

The FRCS Orth Mock Exam Course organised by the Society, took place on the 14th Oct 2006. It was attended by 16 registered delegates and the feedback was extremely good. The course chairman was Mr Venu Kavarthapu and he was ably supported by the following colleagues, all members of the IOS (UK). Mr Joydeep Sinha, Orthopaedic Consultant, King’s College Hospital, Mr Om Lahoti, Orthopaedic Consultant, King’s College Hospital, Mr Ananth Shetty, Orthopaedic Consultant, King’s College Hospital, Mr Senthil Kumar, Orthopaedic Consultant, Kent and Sussex Hospital, Mr Srinivas Samsani, Orthopaedic Consultant, Medway Maritime Hospital, Mr Amit Tolat, Orthopaedic Consultant, Medway Maritime Hospital. Additionally Mr John Compson, Senior Upper Limb Surgeon at Kings, had also taught on the course.

The 8th Annual Meeting of our Society, hosted by Mr Ravikumar, took place on the 13th and 14th May, 2006, at the Clay Oven Conference Centre, Wembley, as scheduled. Mr Ilango and Mr Jago visited Tamilnadu in February 2006, attending the Tamilnadu Orthopaedic Association Meeting and giving talks at other venues in the state.

The 2006 Indo- British visiting fellows from India, Prof Vijayaraghavan, Prof. Arora and Prof Murthy, have just finished their 2 week tour of the UK. Please watch this space for an account of their experiences.

Student elective exchange between India and UK is an exciting concept. Mr Muddu has arranged recently for two Manchester University students to spend a very rewarding elective in Bangalore. A reciprocal UK elective for students from Bangalore is being planned.

Miss Fox, an SpR on the Manchester rotation has been selected to spend 2 weeks in India in February 2007.

Mr Muddu has planned a charity event ( Indian Evening) in Manchester during Feb 2007 to raise funds for a minibus, to help poor patients undergoing reconstructive leprosy surgery, cataract surgery etc., in a rural hospital in Karnataka, for their transportation needs.

One of our members, Mr Rakesh Dalal has attended the Golden Jubilee Meeting of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOACON 2005) held recently in Mumbai on 25 - 30 December 2005. It gives us great pleasure to record that Rakesh presented 4 papers during this meeting, two of which won best paper awards. He also presented a paper on Total Ankle Replacement during the prestigious Dr K T Dholakia Gold Medal Session and this was well received. Mr Dalal also has successfully networked with Foot and Ankle Surgeons of India during the meeting, an important offshoot of this being the possibility of a joint Foot and Ankle Fellowship with IOA and FSI. Well done Rakesh!"

The year 2005 has proved a momentous one. Close on the heels of the Grand Indian Summer that turned out to be a memorable part of the BOA Congress 2004, in Manchester, the IOS (UK) has continued to excel in keeping a frenetic pace in its various educational activities.

The Indo British Fellowship Programme has been proving extremely successful. The First Indo British Travel fellows, Mr Muddu, Mr Funk and Mr Jacobs visited India in February 2005 (please click here for a report by Mr Jacobs).

The  travelling fellows from India, Prof Lee, Mr Bhatia and Mr Rao spent 2 weeks in the UK in September 2005 (click here for details).

Mr Ilango, Mr Aumo and Mr Green are due to visit India in 2006, as travel fellows.

The 7th Annual Conference was successfully held in Pontefract on May 21st and 22nd 2005 under the stewardship of Murti Gollapudi (click here for details).

The First Indian Instructional Shoulder Course was organised in Bangalore in October 2005 (click here for details) .

It gives us great pleasure to announce that Mr Muddu, founder President of our society, was awarded the prestigious Rajyotsava Award by the Government of Karnataka, in recognition of his sterling work in the fields of education, training, cultural and charity work, under the NRI category.

Finally on a sad note, it is with deep regret we record the sad demise of Mr Jayaram Menon, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Ormskirk.
